48.1

मुदा सुरौघैस्त्वमुदारसम्मदै-

रुदीर्य दामोदर इत्यभिष्टुत:

मृदूदर: स्वैरमुलूखले लग-

न्नदूरतो द्वौ ककुभावुदैक्षथा: (48.1)

 

mudā suraughaiṣ tvamudārasammadai-

rūdīrya dāmodara ityabhiṣṭutaḥ 

mṛdūdaraḥ svairamulūkhale laga-

nnadūrato dvau kakubhāvudaiḳṣathāḥ 

 

മുദാ സുരൗഘൈസ്ത്വമുദാരസമ്മദൈ-

രുദീര്യ ദാമോദര ഇത്യഭിഷ്ടുതഃ ।

മൃദൂദരഃ സ്വൈരമുലൂഖലേ ലഗൻ

അദൂരതോ ദ്വൗ കകുഭാവുദൈക്ഷഥാഃ ॥1॥

 

ഉദരത്തിൽ കയർ കെട്ടി ഉരൽചേർന്നു നിൽക്കുമങ്ങയെ

ദാമോദരനെന്നു പേരിട്ടു സാമോദം വാഴ്ത്തി വിണ്ണവർ.

ഉരലും ചാരി മൃദുവയറിൽ വേദനയോടെയെന്നപോൽ

നിൽക്കുമങ്ങ് കണ്ടൂ ദൂരത്തല്ലാതെ രണ്ടു മരുതുമരങ്ങളും

 

The celestial beings gazed in awe and delight,

Hailing Your form and play in the divine light.

Dāmodara, with reverence, they gave You the name,

As the one with His belly, bound by a rope, to His fame.

Standing there feigning distress, Your soft gaze strayed,

To twin Kakubha trees near, in the courtyard’s shade.

 

The celestial beings beheld You with reverence and, overcome with joy, extolled Your divine form, bestowing upon You the name Dāmodara—the One whose tender waist is bound by a rope to the mortar. Standing thus, You feigned distress, Your gaze resting upon a pair of Kakubha trees standing not far away in the courtyard.

 

 

48.2

कुबेरसूनुर्नलकूबराभिध:

परो मणिग्रीव इति प्रथां गत:

महेशसेवाधिगतश्रियोन्मदौ

चिरं किल त्वद्विमुखावखेलताम् (48.2)

 

 

kuberasūnurnalakūbarābhidhaḥ

paro maṇigrīva iti prathāṃ gataḥ 

mahēśasēvādhigataśriyonmadau

ciraṃ kila tvadvimukhāvakḥēlatām

 

കുബേരസൂനുർനളകൂബരാഭിധഃ

പരോ മണിഗ്രീവ ഇതി പ്രഥാം ഗതഃ ।

മഹേശസേവാധിഗത ശ്രിയോൻമദൗ

ചിരം കില ത്വദ്വിമുഖാവഖേലതാം  ॥2॥

 

ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു രണ്ടു കുബേരപുത്രന്മാർ നളകൂബരനും

മണിഗ്രീവനും പ്രസിദ്ധരായ്; മഹേശ്വരപൂജ ചെയ്തു

സമ്പന്നരായവർ ഭവാനിൽ വിമുഖരായ് മദിച്ചു ക്രീഡിച്ചു

വിഷയഭോഗങ്ങളിലാസക്തരായ് കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നുപോൽ

 

Kubera had sons, Nala and Manigriva, of fame,

By propitiating Maheshwara, prosperous, they became.

Yet in arrogance and excess, they long remained,

Indifferent to You, became haughty and disdained.

 

Kubera had two illustrious sons, Nala and Manigriva, who attained great wealth and power through their devoted propitiation of Lord Maheshwara. However, they remained indifferent and disdainful toward You, leading lives marked by arrogance and indulgence in defiant excess.

  

48.3

सुरापगायां किल तौ मदोत्कटौ

सुरापगायद्बहुयौवतावृतौ

विवाससौ केलिपरौ स नारदो

भवत्पदैकप्रवणो निरैक्षत (48.3)

 

 

surāpagāyāṃ kila tau madōtkaṭau

surāpagāyadbahuyauvatāvṛtau

vivāsasau kēliparau sa nāradō

bhavatpadēkapravaṇō nirēikṣata

 

സുരാപഗായാം കില തൌ മദോത്കടൗ

സുരാപഗായദ്ബഹുയൗവതാവൃതൗ ।

വിവാസസൗ കേലിപരൌ സ നാരദോ

ഭവത്പദൈകപ്രവണോ നിരൈക്ഷത ॥3॥

 

ഭവാനിൽ ശ്രദ്ധയില്ലാതെ മദോന്മത്തരായി

മദ്യസേവയിൽ മുഴുകി ഗംഗയിൽ വിവസ്ത്രരായി

നാരികളുമായ് ജലകേളി ചെയ്തു പാടിയാടും

സോദരരെ കണ്ടൂ ലോകാനുഗ്രഹാർത്ഥം ചുറ്റി

നടക്കുന്ന മാമുനി, ഭക്തശിരോമണി നാരദൻ.

 

Nārada, devoted to Thee, with a heart so pure,

Beheld the brothers, drunk and lost in wanton lure.

In Gaṅgā's sacred, holy stream they lay,

Unclothed, in revelry, they spent their day.

Drunken damsels around, their arrogance unfurled,

Heedless of the surroundings and sanctity of the world.

 

The ever devoted to You, sage Nārada, whose sole purpose is to bestow blessings upon the world, beheld these two brothers, intoxicated and immersed in wanton revelry, flaunting themselves unclothed in the sacred waters of the celestial Gaṅgā. Surrounded by drunken damsels, they reveled in their arrogance, heedless of the sanctity of their surroundings.

 

 

48.4

भिया प्रियालोकमुपात्तवाससं

पुरो निरीक्ष्यापि मदान्धचेतसौ

इमौ भवद्भक्त्युपशान्तिसिद्धये

मुनिर्जगौ शान्तिमृते कुत: सुखम् (48.4)

 

 

bhiyā priyālokamupāttavāsasaṃ

purō nirīkṣyāpi madāndhacētasaṃ 

imau bhavadbhaktyupaśāntisiddhaye

munirjagau śāntimr̥tē kutaḥ sukham

 

ഭിയാ പ്രിയാലോകമുപാത്തവാസസം

പുരോ നിരീക്ഷ്യാപി മദാന്ധചേതസൗ ।

ഇമൗ ഭവദ്ഭക്ത്യുപശാന്തിസിദ്ധയേ

മുനിർജ്ജഗൗ ശാന്തിമൃതേ കുത: സുഖം ॥4॥

 

മുനിയെക്കണ്ടു ഭയം പൂണ്ടു നാരീജനം പെട്ടെന്നു

വസ്ത്രമുടുത്തു ബഹുമാനപൂർവ്വം; അക്കാഴ്ചകണ്ടും

മദാന്ധരായ കുബേരസുതന്മാർ ക്രീഡ തുടർന്നൂ

വിവസ്ത്രരായി; അപ്പോൾ ശപിച്ചൂ നാരദമുനിയവരെ

ത്വദ്ഭക്തിയുണ്ടാവാൻ, മനശ്ശാന്തി നേടുവാനായും.

മനസ്സിൽ ശാന്തിയില്ലാതെങ്ങിനെ സുഖം വരും?

 

The women covered themselves out of reverence for the sage,

Unmoved, the brothers continued with no concern for visage

Narada spoke a curse for their good, as his heart stirred,

To have devotion and peace, for joy follows a mind calmed.

 

Upon encountering the sage, the women, in a gesture of reverence, draped themselves in garments, while the brothers, undeterred, persisted in their revelry, remaining both intoxicated and unclothed. Witnessing this, the sage, moved by the sight, uttered a curse upon them—a pronouncement that, in due course, they would come to cultivate a devotion to You and, through this, attain inner peace. For without a serene mind, how can one truly know happiness?

 

   

48.5

युवामवाप्तौ ककुभात्मतां चिरं

हरिं निरीक्ष्याथ पदं स्वमाप्नुतम्

इतीरेतौ तौ भवदीक्षणस्पृहां

गतौ व्रजान्ते ककुभौ बभूवतु: (48.5)

 

 

yuvāmavāptau kakubhātmatāṃ ciraṃ

hariṃ nirīkṣyātha padaṃ svamāpnutam

itīrētau tau bhavadīkṣaṇaspṛhāṃ

gatau vrajāntē kakubhau babhūvatuḥ 

 

യുവാമവാപ്തൗ കകുഭാത്മതാം ചിരം

ഹരിം നിരീക്ഷ്യാഥ പദം സ്വമാപ്നുതം ।

ഇതീരേതൌ തൌ ഭവദീക്ഷണസ്പൃഹാം

ഗതൌ വ്രജാന്തേ കകുഭൌ ബഭൂവതു: ॥5॥

 

മദാന്ധരായി മരുവിയ നിങ്ങളിരുവരും ഇനി രണ്ടു

മരുത് മരങ്ങളായ് നിൽക്കുക ഭൂമിയിൽ ചിരകാലം.

പിന്നെയുണ്ടാം ശാപമോക്ഷം ഭഗവാൻ ഹരിയെ

കാണുന്ന കാലം; ഏവം ഭവദ് ദർശന കാംഷയാ

നിന്നൂ അവരങ്ങേ ഗൃഹത്തിൻ സമീപേ മരങ്ങളായീ

 

Long lost in recklessness, you wandered astray,

So, now, as Kukubha trees, you must stay.

Near Vraja, awaiting redemption, you’ll remain,

Until Lord Hari’s grace fills you with devotion.

 

"May you, who have long led a life of waywardness and heedlessness, be transformed into two Kukubha trees, enduring in this form for an extended period. Your redemption shall come only when you are graced with the opportunity to behold Lord Hari." Obeying the sage's curse, they went to Vrja and endured as Kukubha trees for a long time.

 

48.6

अतन्द्रमिन्द्रद्रुयुगं तथाविधं

समेयुषा मन्थरगामिना त्वया

तिरायितोलूखलरोधनिर्धुतौ

चिराय जीर्णौ परिपातितौ तरू (48.6)

 

 

atandramindr̥druyugaṃ tathāvidhaṃ

samēyuṣā mantharagāminā tvayā 

yirāyitōlūkhalarōdhanirdhutau

cirāya jīrṇau paripātitau tarū 

 

അതന്ദ്രമിന്ദ്രദ്രുയുഗം തഥാവിധം

സമേയുഷാ മന്ഥരഗാമിനാ ത്വയാ ।

തിരായിതോലൂഖലരോധനിർധുതൗ

ചിരായ ജീർണൌ പരിപാതിതൌ തരൂ ॥6॥

 

അരയിൽ കയറാൽ ചേർത്തു കെട്ടിയ ഉരലുമായ്

അതിമന്ദം നടന്നു വരുന്ന കൃഷ്ണൻ മരുത് മരങ്ങൾക്കു

സമീപമെത്തി, ഉരൽ വിലങ്ങനെ വലിച്ചു നീക്കി വേഗം  

രണ്ടിനുമിടയിലൂടെ കടക്കവേ മരങ്ങൾ രണ്ടും കടപുഴകി

ജീർണ്ണിച്ച ശാഖകൾ ചിതറിപ്പരന്നുവീണൂ നാലുപാടും.

 

Slowly, You rolled the mortar tied to You, sidewise,

Neared the twin trees and dragged the mortar crosswise.

Pulled the rope hard through the narrow gap between,

Fell the trees, their branches shattered and strewn.

 

Slowly hauling the mortar as it rolled along its side, You approached the twin trees, the rope still tied to Your belly. Then, You drew the mortar crosswise through the narrow gap between the trees obstructing the move. Unable to withstand the force, the trees fell, with their branches scattered around.

 

 

48.7

अभाजि शाखिद्वितयं यदा त्वया

तदैव तद्गर्भतलान्निरेयुषा

महात्विषा यक्षयुगेन तत्क्षणा-

दभाजि गोविन्द भवानपि स्तवै: (48.7)

 

abhāji śākhidvitayaṃ yadā tvayā

tadaiva tadgarbhatalānnirēyuṣā 

mahātvishā yakṣayugēna tatkṣaṇā-

dabhāji gōvinda bhavānapi stavaiḥ 

 

അഭാജി ശാഖിദ്വിതയം യദാ ത്വയാ

തദൈവ തദ്ഗർഭതലാന്നിരേയുഷാ ।

മഹാത്വിഷാ യക്ഷയുഗേന തത്ക്ഷണാദ്

അഭാജി ഗോവിന്ദ ഭവാനപി സ്തവൈ: ॥7॥

 

മരങ്ങൾ രണ്ടും പിളർന്നു വീണവാറേ, ക്ഷണത്തിൽ

പുറത്തുവന്നൂ രണ്ടു യക്ഷന്മാരതിന്റെ ഉള്ളിൽനിന്നും.  

ശാപമോചിതർ, അതിചൈതന്യവാന്മാർ ഭക്തിപൂർവ്വം

അങ്ങേ സേവിച്ചുവല്ലോ ഗോവിന്ദാ സ്തോത്രങ്ങൾ ചൊല്ലി

 

As the twin trees fell and sundered,

Two radiant Yakshas, from their core, emerged.

O Govinda, they extolled You and worshipped,

The moment they came out, free of curse, liberated.

 

As the two mighty trees fell and sundered, from their very roots emerged two resplendent Yakshas. O Govinda, the moment they manifested, they began extolling Your divine glories and worshipping You, now liberated from the curse that had bound them.

 

48.8

इहान्यभक्तोऽपि समेष्यति क्रमात्

भवन्तमेतौ खलु रुद्रसेवकौ

मुनिप्रसादाद्भव्दङ्घ्रिमागतौ

गतौ वृणानौ खलु भक्तिमुत्तमाम् (48.8)

 

 

ihānyabhaktō'pi samēṣyati kramāt

bhavantamētau khalu rudrasēvakau

muniprasādādbhavdaṅghrimāgatau

gatau vr̥ṇānau khalu bhaktimuttamām

 

ഇഹാന്യഭക്തോഽപി സമേഷ്യതി ക്രമാത്

ഭവന്തമേതൌ ഖലു രുദ്രസേവകൌ ।

മുനിപ്രസാദാദ്ഭവ്ദങ്ഘ്രിമാഗതൌ

ഗതൌ വൃണാനൌ ഖലു ഭക്തിമുത്തമാം  ॥8॥

 

കാലക്രമത്തിൽ അന്യദേവതാ ഭക്തരും

പുണ്യവാന്മാരായ് തവ ഭക്തരായ്ത്തീരുന്നു.

രുദ്രഭക്തരാമീ യക്ഷർക്കും കിട്ടീ തവ ദർശനം

നാരദമുനി പ്രസാദാൽ; ഉത്തമഭക്തി വരം തേടി

അവർ മടങ്ങി സ്വഗേഹത്തിലേക്കു ധന്യരായീ

 

In time, all hearts, though bound to other Gods,

Find virtues, and reach Your grace, devoted.

These Yakshas were Lord Rudra's devotees,

But sage Nārada’s compassion led them to thee.

They did pray only for supreme devotion,

Before returning to their abodes divine.

 

In due course, even the devotees of other Gods acquire virtues and ultimately become Your devotees. These two Yakshas, followers of Lord Rudra, were led to Your lotus feet through the compassion of Sage Nārada. Moved by divine grace, they fervently prayed and earnestly sought a boon, desiring supreme devotion unto You before returning to their celestial abodes.

 

 

48.9

ततस्तरूद्दारणदारुणारव-

प्रकम्पिसम्पातिनि गोपमण्डले

विलज्जितत्वज्जननीमुखेक्षिणा

व्यमोक्षि नन्देन भवान् विमोक्षद: (48.9)

 

 

tatastarūddāraṇadāruṇārava-

prakampisampātini gōpamaṇḍalē 

vilajjitatvajjananīmukhēkṣiṇā

vyamōkṣi nandēna bhavān vimōkṣadaḥ 

 

തതസ്തരൂദ്ദാരണദാരുണാരവ-

പ്രകമ്പിസമ്പാതിനി ഗോപമണ്ഡലേ ।

വിലജ്ജിതത്വജ്ജനനീമുഖേക്ഷിണാ

വ്യമോക്ഷി നന്ദേന ഭവാൻ വിമോക്ഷദ: ॥9॥

 

മരങ്ങൾ കടപുഴകിപ്പതിച്ച ഘോരശബ്ദം കേട്ടു

പരിഭ്രമത്തോടെ ഗോപജനങ്ങളോടിയെത്തീ.

പശ്ചാത്തപത്തിൽ ലജ്ജിച്ചു നിന്ന യശോദയെ  

നോക്കി നന്ദനനങ്ങതൻ കെട്ടഴിച്ചൂ സകലർക്കും

മോക്ഷപ്രദായകനാമങ്ങയെ വിമുക്തനാക്കി  

 

At the thunderous crash of falling trees,

The Gopas came running, fearful and anxious.

Nandagopa gazed at Your Mother,

Shamed by what’d happened there.

Nanda released You, untying the rope,

Liberating Thee, the giver of liberation.

 

Upon hearing the thunderous crash of the falling trees, the Gopa people rushed to the scene, overcome with astonishment and fear. Nandagopa turned his gaze toward Your Mother, who stood abashed by the consequence of her actions. Moved by the moment, he freed You, untying the rope that bound You—You, the very One who liberates all from the fetters of saṃsāra, the endless cycle of birth and death.

 

 

48.10

महीरुहोर्मध्यगतो बतार्भको

हरे: प्रभावादपरिक्षतोऽधुना

इति ब्रुवाणैर्गमितो गृहं भवान्

मरुत्पुराधीश्वर पाहि मां गदात् (48.10)

 

 

mahīruhōrmadhyagatō batārbhakō

harēḥ prabhāvādaparikṣatō'dhunā 

iti bruvāṇairgamitō gr̥haṃ bhavān

marutpurādhīśvara pāhi māṃ gadāt

 

മഹീരുഹോർമധ്യഗതോ ബതാർഭകോ

ഹരേ: പ്രഭാവാദപരിക്ഷതോഽധുനാ ।

ഇതി ബ്രുവാണൈർഗമിതോ ഗൃഹം ഭവാൻ

മരുത്പുരാധീശ്വര പാഹി മാം ഗദാത് ॥10॥

 

“ഇപ്പോളീ വീണ മരങ്ങൾക്കിടയിലായിട്ടും ഉണ്ണി

രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടതെത്ര അദ്ഭുതം! ഹരികൃപാ കടാക്ഷം”

ഏവം ചൊല്ലി നന്ദാദികൾ സ്വഗൃഹത്തിലേയ്ക്കു നയിച്ച

മരുത്പുരാധീശാ! എന്നെ രക്ഷിക്കണേ വിഭോ!

 

 

“By Lord Hari's grace alone, the child was saved,

Amidst the fallen trees, safe and unharmed.”

They journeyed home saying, “It's a miracle divine.”,

O Lord of Guruvayur, pray, rescue me from my pain.

 

"Only by the divine grace of Lord Hari is the child spared and unharmed, despite being amidst the fallen trees. Truly, it is a miraculous wonder! Thus, they made their way home. O Lord of Guruvayur, deliver me from the affliction of all my ailments."
