44.1

गूढं वसुदेवगिरा

कर्तुं ते निष्क्रियस्य संस्कारान्

हृद्गतहोरातत्त्वो

गर्गमुनिस्त्वत् गृहं विभो गतवान् (44.1)

 

gūḍhaṁ vasudevagirā

kartuṁ te niṣkriyasya saṁskārān

hṛdgatahorātattvo

gargamunistvat gṛhaṁ vibho gatavān

 

ഗൂഢം വസുദേവഗിരാ

കർത്തും തേ നിഷ്ക്രിയസ്യ സംസ്കാരാന്‍ ।

ഹൃദ്ഗതഹോരാതത്ത്വോ

ഗർഗമുനിസ്ത്വദ് ഗൃഹം വിഭോ ഗതവാന്‍ ॥१॥

 

ക്രിയാ കർമ്മങ്ങളൊന്നുമില്ലാ ഭവാനെങ്കിലും വസുദേവർ

രഹസ്യമായ് തവ ജാതകർമ്മാദികൾ ചെയ്യിക്കാനായ് കുലഗുരു

ജ്യോതിശ്ശാസ്ത്ര വിശാരദൻ, ഗർഗ്ഗമുനിയോടഭ്യർത്ഥിച്ചപ്പോൾ

പ്രഖ്യാതനാം മഹർഷിയെത്തീ ഗോകുലേ നന്ദഗൃഹത്തിൽ

 

Beyond the rites and rituals, You transcend all,

Yet, Gargacharya went to Gokula at Vasudeva's call.

Adept in astrology and astronomy, the Guru of the clan,

To perform sacraments for You as per the divine plan.

 

Transcending all prescribed rites of passage and ceremonial obligations, You remain untouched by worldly conventions. Yet, at the behest of Vasudeva, Guru Gargacharya, the eminent authority on astronomy and astrology, discreetly arrived at the house of Nandagopa in Gokula to perform the sacraments for You.

 

 

44.2

नन्दोऽथ नन्दितात्मा

वृन्दिष्टं मानयन्नमुं यमिनाम्

मन्दस्मितार्द्रमूचे

त्वत्संस्कारान् विधातुमुत्सुकधी: (44.2)

 

nando'tha nanditātmā

vṛndiṣṭaṁ mānayannamuṁ yaminām

mandasmitārdramūce

tvatsaṁskārān vidhātumutsukadhīḥ

 

നന്ദോfഥ നന്ദിതാത്മാ

വൃന്ദിഷ്ടം മാനയന്നമും യമിനാം 

മന്ദസ്മിതാർദ്രമൂചേ

ത്വത്സംസ്കാരാന്‍ വിധാതുമുത്സുകധീ: ॥२॥

 

യോഗിവര്യൻ ഗർഗ്ഗമുനി സ്വഗൃഹത്തിലെത്തിയപ്പോൾ

അതിഥിയെ സാമോദം ഉപചരിച്ചൂ നന്ദഗോപർ;

പിന്നെ അങ്ങേ ജാതകർമ്മങ്ങൾചെയ്യിക്കാൻ

ഉത്സാഹമോടെ സുസ്മിതനായ് അർത്ഥിച്ചൂ

മുനിയോടേവം സൌമ്യനായാദരപൂർവ്വം.

 

Nandagopa, with devotion and respect, greeted the guest,

His heart alight with joy at seeing the sage so wise.

Humbly requested sporting a smile of reverence,

Gargacharya to do the rites for You in Thy presence.

 

Nandagopa warmly received the esteemed sage with profound reverence, honoring him with the highest regard. Overjoyed by the arrival of such an illustrious guest, he approached the venerable Guru Gargacharya with a humble demeanor and a gentle smile, earnestly requesting him to perform the sacred rites for You.

 

44.3

यदुवंशाचार्यत्वात्

सुनिभृतमिदमार्य कार्यमिति कथयन्

गर्गो निर्गतपुलक

श्चक्रे तव साग्रजस्य नामानि (44.3)

 

yaduvaṁśācāryatvāt

sunibhṛtamidamārya kāryamiti kathayan

gargo nirgatapulaka

śchakre tava sāgrajasya nāmāni

 

യദുവംശാചാര്യത്വാത്

സുനിഭൃതമിദമാര്യ കാര്യമിതി കഥയൻ ।

ഗർഗോ നിർഗതപുളക

ശ്ചക്രേ തവ സാഗ്രജസ്യ നാമാനി ॥३॥

 

“പൂജ്യനാം നന്ദഗോപരേ ഞാൻ യദുകുലഗുരുവാകയാൽ

ശിശുവിൻ ജാതകർമ്മം അതിഗോപ്യമായ്  നടത്തേണം”

ഏവം പറഞ്ഞതിഹർഷമോടെ മഹർഷിവര്യൻ ഭവാനും

ജ്യേഷ്ഠനും യഥാവിധി നാമകരണം ചെയ്തു കൃതാർത്ഥനായി.  

 

"O respected Nanda, we must conduct the rituals plan,

In secret, as I am the Guru of the Yadava clan.”

With horripilation over his body, the sage performed,

Vedic rites in secret; You and Your brother were named.

 

"O esteemed Chieftain Nanda, as the preceptor of the Yadava clan, we must perform these rites in utmost secrecy," declared the sage, with horripilation all over his body. Thus, with profound reverence, he quietly conducted the naming ceremony for You and Your brother as per the Vedic tradition but maintaining discretion.

 

 

44.4

कथमस्य नाम कुर्वे

सहस्रनाम्नो ह्यनन्तनाम्नो वा

इति नूनं गर्गमुनि

श्चक्रे तव नाम नाम रहसि विभो (44.4)

 

kathamasya nāma kurve

sahasranāmno hyanantanāmno vā

iti nūnaṁ gargamuni

śchakre tava nāma nāma rahasi vibho

 

കഥമസ്യ നാമ കുർവേ

സഹസ്രനാമ്നോ ഹ്യനന്തനാമ്നോ വാ ।

ഇതി നൂനം ഗർഗമുനി:

ചക്രേ തവ നാമ നാമ രഹസി വിഭോ ॥४॥

 

“അങ്ങേയ്ക്കുണ്ടായിരം നാമങ്ങൾ; പോരാ ഭവാനു

നാമധേയങ്ങൾ അസംഖ്യമാം; അപ്പോളെങ്ങിനെ

അങ്ങേയ്ക്കൊരു പേരിടും ഞാൻ?”എന്നോർത്താവാം

മുനി ചെയ്തൂ നാമകരണകർമ്മം അതിരഹസ്യമായ് .

 

 

Gargacharya discretely gave You a name, adored,

"O Lord," with a pensive mind he pondered.

"You are known with names, one thousand,

Nay, Your names are innumerable, I see no end.

How then, can I ever call You just one that’s fine,

To convey Thy essence in a single name divine?”

 

The venerable sage Gargacharya, conducting the naming ceremony in secrecy, seemed to reflect deeply as he bestowed a name upon You: “O Lord, You are adorned with a thousand names—indeed, Your names are beyond enumeration. How, then, can I confine Your infinite essence to a single name?”

 

 

44.5

कृषिधातुणकाराभ्यां

सत्तानन्दात्मतां किलाभिलपत्

जगदघकर्षित्वं वा

कथयदृषि: कृष्णनाम ते व्यतनोत् (44.5)

 

kṛṣidhātuṇakārābhyāṁ

sattānandātmatāṁ kilābhipat

jagadaghakarṣitvaṁ vā

kathayadṛṣiḥ kṛṣṇanāma te vyatanot

 

കൃഷിധാതുണകാരാഭ്യാം

സത്താനന്ദാത്മതാം കിലാഭിലപത് ।

ജഗദഘകർഷിത്വം വാ

കഥയദൃഷി: കൃഷ്ണനാമ തേ വ്യതനോത് ॥५॥

 

കൃഷ് ധാതുവിൽ സത്ത; ‘ണ’ ശബ്ദത്തിലാനന്ദം

കൃഷ്ണനെന്നു നാമം നൽകീ മുനി ഭവാന്നായ്.

കൃഷ്ണനാമത്തിൽ വിലീനം സകലപാപഹരത്വം

കൃഷ്ണനാമം ധർമ്മപ്രഘോഷകം ബ്രഹ്മസ്വരൂപം

 

From "Krish," the root, denoting existence, Sat,

And "Na," indicating bliss absolute, Ananda.

He coined the name “Krishna”, the union of Being and Bliss,

The name divine, Your nature, which clears sins of all

 

 

From the root Krish—denoting existence (Sat)—and the phoneme Na, signifying absolute bliss (Ānanda), he synthesized the name Krishna, encapsulating Your true nature as the union of existence and bliss. Moreover, the name Krishna, as bestowed by him, also signifies its power to absolve the sins of all beings in the world.

 

44.6

अन्यांश्च नामभेदान्

व्याकुर्वन्नग्रजे च रामादीन्

अतिमानुषानुभावं

न्यगदत्त्वामप्रकाशयन् पित्रे (44.6)

 

anyāṁśca nāmabhedān

vyākurvannagraje ca rāmādīn

atimānuṣānubhāvaṁ

nyagadattvāmaprakāśayan pitre

 

അന്യാംശ്ച നാമഭേദാന്‍

വ്യാകുർവന്നഗ്രജേ ച രാമാദീൻ ।

അതിമാനുഷാനുഭാവം

ന്യഗദത്ത്വാമപ്രകാശയന്‍ പിത്രേ ॥६॥

 

ഭവാന്റെ മറ്റു നാമഭേദങ്ങളും മഹിമയും

അതിമാനുഷപ്രഭാവനാണു പുത്രനെന്നും 

മഹർഷി ചൊല്ലീ നന്ദഗോപരോടായ് തവ

ജന്മരഹസ്യമവ്യക്തമായ്; പിന്നെ രാമാദി

നാമങ്ങൾ നൽകീ മുനി അഗ്രജശിശുവിനും 

 

The sage bestowed upon You many great names galore,

Vāsudeva and all and names like Rama for Your elder brother.

To Nandagopa he hinted on Thy greatness to gleam,

Yet, he veiled Your true nature, as the Lord supreme.

 

The sage bestowed upon You several illustrious names, including Vāsudeva, and named Your elder brother Rāma. He then subtly intimated to the esteemed Nandagopa that You were no ordinary child and would manifest extraordinary, divine feats. However, he refrained from fully disclosing Your supreme, transcendental nature as the Lord.

 

44.7

स्निह्यति यस्तव पुत्रे

मुह्यति स न मायिकै: पुन: शोकै:

द्रुह्यति य: स तु नश्ये

दित्यवदत्ते महत्त्वमृषिवर्य: (44.7)

muhyati sa na māyikaiḥ punaḥ śokaiḥ

druhyati yaḥ sa tu naśye

dityavadatte mahattvamṛṣivaryaḥ

 

സ്നിഹ്യതി യസ്തവ പുത്രേ

മുഹ്യതി സ ന മായികൈ: പുന: ശോകൈ: ।

ദ്രുഹ്യതി യ: സ തു നശ്യേ

ദിത്യവദത്തേ മഹത്ത്വമൃഷിവര്യ: ॥७॥

 

അങ്ങേ മഹിമകൾ വർണ്ണിച്ചൂ മുനി “ആരീ ഉണ്ണിയെ

സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നുവോ അവനില്ലാ മായാജന്യമാം

ശോകങ്ങളിനി, മോഹങ്ങളും; എന്നാൽ ആരിവനെ

ദ്രോഹിക്കുന്നുവോ അവനുണ്ടാം നാശമതു നിശ്ചയം”

 

Gargacharya proclaimed Thy greatness and grace,

"To those who love this child, no illusion shall embrace.

Freed from sorrow, their hearts shall find light,

But those who oppose Him will fall in their plight."

 

Gargacharya expounded Your supreme greatness, declaring, “Whoever offers their love and devotion to this divine child shall remain untouched by the delusion of Māyā and shall be freed from sorrow henceforth. However, whoever dares to oppose or assail Him shall inevitably meet their destruction, without a doubt.”

 

44.8

जेष्यति बहुतरदैत्यान्

नेष्यति निजबन्धुलोकममलपदम्

श्रोष्यसि सुविमलकीर्ती

रस्येति भवद्विभूतिमृषिरूचे (44.8)

 

jeṣyati bahutara daityān

neṣyati nijabandhulokamamalapadam

śroṣyasi suvimalakīrtī

rasyeti bhavadvibhūtirṛṣirūce

 

ജേഷ്യതി ബഹുതരദൈത്യാന്‍

നേഷ്യതി നിജബന്ധുലോകമമലപദം ।

ശ്രോഷ്യസി സുവിമലകീർത്തീ-

രസ്യേതി ഭവദ് വിഭൂതിമൃഷിരൂചേ ॥८॥

 

“ദിവ്യനാമിപ്പുത്രൻ ജയിക്കുമനേകം

അസുരവീരന്മാരെ; ഇവൻ നയിച്ചിടും

ബന്ധുജനങ്ങളെ ഉന്നതങ്ങളിലും;

കേൾക്കുമാറാകും അങ്ങേയക്കവന്റെ

കീർത്തി,”യെന്നെല്ലാമങ്ങേ മഹിമകൾ

വർണ്ണിച്ചു ചൊല്ലീ ഗർഗ്ഗമുനി മോദമോടെ. 

 

Gargacharya declared in awe of Your might,

“This divine son shall win over demons in fight.

Leading his kin to realms pristine as white,

His fame, unsullied, shall shine always bright.”

 

Gargacharya, extolling Your supreme greatness and divine glory, proclaimed: “This divine son of yours shall vanquish numerous demons and shall lead his kinsmen to realms of purity. In time, you will hear of his immaculate fame.”

 

 

44.9

अमुनैव सर्वदुर्गं

तरितास्थ कृतास्थमत्र तिष्ठध्वम्

हरिरेवेत्यनभिलप

न्नित्यादि त्वामवर्णयत् स मुनि: (44.9)

 

amunaiva sarvadurgaṁ

taritāstha kṛtāsthamatra tiṣṭhadhvam

harirevetyanabhilapa

nnityādi tvāmavarṇayat sa muniḥ

 

അമുനൈവ സർവദുർഗം

തരിതാസ്ഥ കൃതാസ്ഥമത്ര തിഷ്ഠധ്വം ।

ഹരിരേവേത്യനഭിലപൻ

ഇത്യാദി ത്വാമവർണയത് സ മുനി: ॥९॥

 

“അനർത്ഥങ്ങളെല്ലാം തീരും നിങ്ങൾക്കിപ്പുത്രനാൽ

കാത്തുകൊള്ളുകിവനെ സശ്രദ്ധം  സ്വസ്ഥമായ്”

ഏവം മഹർഷി അങ്ങേ മാഹാത്മ്യം ചൊല്ലിയെന്നാലും

സുവ്യക്തമാക്കിയില്ലങ്ങു മഹാവിഷ്ണുവാണെന്ന സത്യം 

 

“Through Your Son's grace, all barriers will fall,

Trust in Him, for He will guide you through it all.”

The sage spoke of Your greatness, at length,

Yet didn’t reveal: You are Lord Hari, in truth.

 

Through the grace of your Son, all obstacles will be overcome. Place your unwavering trust in him, for he shall guide you. While the sage extolled Your greatness, he refrained from revealing the profound secret that You are, in truth, Lord Hari Himself.

 

44.10

गर्गेऽथ निर्गतेऽस्मिन्

नन्दितनन्दादिनन्द्यमानस्त्वम्

मद्गदमुद्गतकरुणो

निर्गमय श्रीमरुत्पुराधीश (44.10)

ഗർഗ്ഗേfഥ നിർഗതേfസ്മിൻ

മദ്ഗദം ഉദ്ഗതകരുണോ

നിർഗമയ ശ്രീമരുത്പുരാധീശ ॥१०॥

 

ഏവം ഭവദ് ഗുണഗണങ്ങൾ വർണ്ണിച്ചു ഗർഗ്ഗമുനി

മടങ്ങിപ്പോയശേഷം സന്തുഷ്ടരാം നന്ദഗോപാദികളാൽ

പരിലാളിതനായ ഗുരുവായൂരപ്പാ! വിഭോ! എന്നിൽ

കൃപയുണ്ടാവണേ, എൻ വ്യാധികൾ നീക്കേണമേ!    

 

Gargacharya left after expounding Your merit,

His words left Nandagopa and his kin in delight.

At Gokula, they beheld You with joy divine,

O Guruvayoorappa, grant me relief from my pain.

 

After expounding upon Your divine glories, Gargacharya returned, and the people of Gokula, including Nandagopa and others, were filled with immense joy. They gazed upon You with profound admiration and affection. O Lord Guruvayoorappa, I humbly beseech Your compassion—may You alleviate my suffering and grant me Your grace.
