51.1

कदाचन व्रजशिशुभि: समं भवान्

वनाशने विहितमति: प्रगेतराम्

समावृतो बहुतरवत्समण्डलै:

सतेमनैर्निरगमदीश जेमनै: (51.1)

 

kadācana vrajaśiśubhiḥ samam bhavān

vanāśane vihitamatiḥ pragetarām

samāvṛto bahutara vatsamaṇḍalaiḥ

satemanairniragamadīśa jemanaiḥ 

 

കദാചന വ്രജശിശുഭി: സമം ഭവാൻ

വനാശനേ വിഹിതമതി: പ്രഗേതരാം ।

സമാവൃതോ ബഹുതരവത്സമണ്ഡലൈ:

സതേമനൈർ നിരഗമദീശ ജേമനൈ: ॥1॥

 

ഭഗവൻ! അവിടന്നൊരുദിനം ഗോപക്കൂട്ടുകാരുമൊത്ത്

കാലിമേയ്ക്കാനതിരാവിലെ  ഏറെ പൈക്കിടാങ്ങളുമായി

വനഭോജനം ചെയ്യാനുറച്ചു ചോറും കറികളും മോരുമെല്ലാം

പൊതിഞ്ഞെടുത്തു പുറപ്പെട്ടൂ വീട്ടിൽനിന്നു സാമോദം

 

O Lord, You chose to hold a picnic in the woods,

Far from home, with friends tending the herds.

Early in the morning, You happily ventured,

Packing along the treats, so varied.

Rice, buttermilk, and curries so sweet,

Delicacies to share, in nature's retreat.

 

O Lord, You decided to partake in a serene picnic amidst the forest, tending to the many herds of cows and calves in the company of Your beloved companions. You happily embarked upon the journey, from home, early in the morning, carrying a lunch basket filled with cooked rice, buttermilk, savory curries, and an array of delicacies.

 

 

51.2

विनिर्यतस्तव चरणाम्बुजद्वया-

दुदञ्चितं त्रिभुवनपावनं रज:

महर्षय: पुलकधरै: कलेबरैर्

उदूहिरे धृतभवदीक्षणोत्सवा: (51.2) 

 

viniryatastava caraṇāmbujadvayā-

dudañcitam tribhuvanapāvanaṃ rajaḥ 

maharṣayaḥ pulakadharaiḥ kalebarair-

udūhire dhṛtabhavadīkṣaṇotsavāḥ

 

വിനിര്യതസ്തവ ചരണാംബുജദ്വയാദ്

ഉദഞ്ചിതം ത്രിഭുവനപാവനം രജ: ।

മഹർഷയ: പുലകധരൈ: കലേബരൈർ

ഉദൂഹിരേ ധൃതഭവദീക്ഷണോത്സവാ: ॥2॥

 

വനത്തിലേക്കതി ഉത്സാഹമോടെ നടക്കും ഭവദ്

കാലടികളിൽ നിന്നു പാറും പൊടി ശുദ്ധമാക്കുന്നു

മൂലോകങ്ങളെയുമെന്നറിയും മാമുനിമാരാ പൊടി

മേലണിഞ്ഞു പുളകിതരായങ്ങയെ നോക്കി നിന്നു.

 

As You stepped out, dust arose from Your lotus feet,

Sages know, three worlds get purified by this dust,

The holy dust, in profound joy, their bodies received,

Beholding Thy sight divine, Goosebumps adorned.

 

As You started Your journey into the forest, the dust from Your lotus feet rose into the air. The revered sages know that this very dust holds the power to purify the three realms. They received the dust on their bodies, with horripilation and profound delight, as they beheld You, the divine sight before them.

 

 

51.3

प्रचारयत्यविरलशाद्वले तले

पशून् विभो भवति समं कुमारकै:

अघासुरो न्यरुणदघाय वर्तनीं

भयानक: सपदि शयानकाकृति: (51.3)

 

pracārayatyaviralaśādavale tale

paśūn vibho bhavati samam kumārakaiḥ 

aghāsuro nyaruṇadaghāya vartanīm

bhayānakaḥ sapadi śayānakākṛtiḥ 

 

പ്രചാരയത്യവിരലശാദ്വലേ തലേ

പശൂൻ വിഭോ ഭവതി സമം കുമാരകൈ: ।

അഘാസുരോ ന്യരുണദഘായ വർത്തനീം

ഭയാനക: സപദി ശയാനകാകൃതി: ॥3॥

 

വിശാലമാം പുൽത്തകിടികൾ നിറഞ്ഞയിടങ്ങളിൽ

കൂട്ടരുമായ് പശുക്കളെ മേച്ചു രസിച്ചു നടക്കും വേളയിൽ

വഴിതടഞ്ഞൂ ഭവാനെ ദ്രോഹിക്കാനൊരു പെരുമ്പാമ്പായി

ഭയങ്കരനഘാസുരൻ, വിഭോ! പാപകൃത്യം നിനച്ചു നൂനം.

 

O Lord, amidst the meadows deep and green,

You roamed with lads, tending cattle, pastoral scene.

Then Akhasura came as a python, huge and fearsome,

Lord! He blocked Your path with an evil intent to harm

 

Lord! As You and Your companions were blissfully tending to the cattle amidst the verdant, luxuriant meadows, the demon Akhasura, assuming the form of a fearsome python, obstructed Your path with malicious intent.

 

 

51.4

महाचलप्रतिमतनोर्गुहानिभ-

प्रसारितप्रथितमुखस्य कानने

मुखोदरं विहरणकौतुकाद्गता:

कुमारका: किमपि विदूरगे त्वयि (51.4)

 

mahācalapratimatānorguhānibha-

prasāritapratithamukhasya kānane

mukhodaraṃ viharaṇakautukādgatāḥ

kumārakāḥ kimapi vidūrage tvayi

 

മഹാചലപ്രതിമതനോർഗുഹാനിഭ-

പ്രസാരിതപ്രഥിതമുഖസ്യ കാനനേ ।

മുഖോദരം വിഹരണകൗതുകാദ്ഗതാ:

കുമാരകാ: കിമപി വിദൂരഗേ ത്വയി ॥4॥

 

അവിടുന്നരികിലില്ലാത്ത നേരമങ്ങേ കൂട്ടുകാർ

അക്കാട്ടിൽ മലപോൽ കിടക്കുമഘാസുരന്റെ

തുറന്നു വിടർന്ന വായിൽ ഗുഹയെന്നോർത്തു

നടന്നു കയറീ സകൌതുകം കളിക്കുവാനായീ

 

As You moved forward, your friends strayed behind,

In playful innocence, they sought what they'd find.

Into a colossal python's maw, they wandered, unaware,

Mistaking it for a mountain cave, hoping to play there.

 

You had gone ahead while your companions ventured around, lagging. They, in their playful innocence, entered the gaping maw of the colossal python, mistakenly believing it to be the entrance to a mountain cave, hoping to play there.

 

 

51.5

प्रमादत: प्रविशति पन्नगोदरं

क्वथत्तनौ पशुपकुले सवात्सके

विदन्निदं त्वमपि विवेशिथ प्रभो

सुहृज्जनं विशरणमाशु रक्षितुम् (51.5)

 

pramādataḥ praviśati pannagodaraṃ

kvathattanau paśupakule svātsake |

vidannidaṃ tvamapi viveśitha prabho

suhṛjjanaṃ viśaraṇamāśu rakṣitum ||5||

 

പ്രമാദത: പ്രവിശതി പന്നഗോദരം

ക്വഥത്തനൗ പശുപകുലേ സവാത്സകേ ।

വിദന്നിദം ത്വമപി വിവേശിത പ്രഭോ

സുഹൃജ്ജനം വിശരണമാശു രക്ഷിതും ॥5॥

 

കളിക്കുവാൻ പശുക്കളെക്കൂട്ടി പാമ്പിന്റെ വായിൽ കയറിയ

ഗോപബാലർ കടുത്ത ചൂടാൽ വലഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കവേ, പ്രഭോ!

വേറില്ലവർക്കു ഗതിയെന്നറിഞ്ഞു കൃപാലുവാം ഭവാൻ കയറീ

അഘാസുരന്റെ വായിലേക്കവരെ രക്ഷിക്കുവാനുറച്ചുതന്നെ.

 

Into the python’s maw, Gopas and calves strayed,

Within the belly of the beast, they felt scorched.

As they stood there exhausted, You decided to enter,

Knowing they have no one else but You as their saviour.

 

Your companions, the Gopa friends, inadvertently entered the python’s belly alongside the herds of calves, only to find the place unbearably hot. Overcome by the oppressive heat, they were left exhausted and helpless. In their dire plight, you, fully aware that no other savior for them, entered the python’s belly to rescue them.

 

 

51.6

गलोदरे विपुलितवर्ष्मणा त्वया

महोरगे लुठति निरुद्धमारुते

द्रुतं भवान् विदलितकण्ठमण्डलो

विमोचयन् पशुपपशून् विनिर्ययौ (51.6)

 

galodare vipulitavarṣmaṇā tvayā

mahorage luṭhati niruddhamārute

drutaṃ bhavān vidalitakaṇṭhamaṇḍalo

vimocayan paśupapaśūn viniryayau

 

ഗലോദരേ വിപുലിതവർഷ്മണാ ത്വയാ

മഹോരഗേ ലുഠതി നിരുദ്ധമാരുതേ ।

ദ്രുതം ഭവാൻ വിദലിതകണ്ഠമണ്ഡലോ

വിമോചയൻ പശുപപശൂൻ വിനിര്യയൗ ॥6॥

 

കഴുത്തിനുള്ളിൽക്കടന്നു ഭീമാകാരനായ് മാറി പാമ്പിന്നു

ശ്വാസം മുട്ടുമാറവിടുന്നതിവേഗമപ്പോൾ ചുരുണ്ടുപിടയും

പെരുമ്പാമ്പിന്റെ വട്ടക്കഴുത്തിനെപ്പിളർന്നു കൊന്നൂ

ദുഷ്ടനെ; പുറത്തുവന്നൂ പശുക്കളുമൊത്തു കൂട്ടാരുമായീ

 

Entering the python's throat, Your form expanded,

Choking the breath, the beast writhed.

Cleaving through its neck, You ended his fight.

Freeing Your friends and calves to their delight

 

You entered within the cavity of the python's throat and expanded at an astounding rate, swiftly growing to a colossal size, thereby constricting its ability to breathe. As the creature writhed in agony, You cleaved through its neck with force, liberating both Your companions and the calves from the beast's belly.

 

 

51.7

क्षणं दिवि त्वदुपगमार्थमास्थितं

महासुरप्रभवमहो महो महत्

विनिर्गते त्वयि तु निलीनमञ्जसा

नभ:स्थले ननृतुरथो जगु: सुरा: (51.7)

 

kṣaṇaṃ divi tvadupagamārthamāsthitaṃ

mahāsuraprabhavamahaḥ maho mahat

vinirgate tvayi tu nilīnamañjasā

nabhaḥsthale nanṛturatho jaguḥ surāḥ 

 

ക്ഷണം ദിവി ത്വദുപഗമാർഥമാസ്ഥിതം

മഹാസുരപ്രഭവമഹോ മഹോ മഹത് ।

വിനിർഗതേ ത്വയി തു നിലീനമഞ്ജസാ

നഭ:സ്ഥലേ നനൃതുരഥോ ജഗു: സുരാ: ॥7॥

 

അസുരനിൽനിന്നു മഹതാമൊരു തേജ:പുഞ്ഛം

പുറത്തു വന്നുനിന്നൂ തെല്ലിട നഭസ്സിൽ, അവിടുന്ന്

പുറത്തു വരുവാൻ; പിന്നെയങ്ങയിൽ വിലീനമായീ.

വിണ്ണവർ വിസ്മയം കണ്ടൂ സ്തുതിച്ചൂ, പാടിയുമാടിയും.  

 

From the demon's body, a light form arose,

Soaring to the sky, it alighted with a glow.

From the python's body, You emerged,

And with You, the radiant being merged.

The celestials extolled You, the divine being,

Celebrating the event by singing and dancing.

 

From within the slain demon’s carcass, a luminous and resplendent form emerged, ascending briefly into the heavens. Shortly thereafter, You came out from the immense body of the python. The radiant entity, having lingered in the sky, then merged into Your divine form. Witnessing this wondrous event, the celestial beings were seized with awe and exultation, praising You with songs and dances.

 

51.8

सविस्मयै: कमलभवादिभि: सुरै-

रनुद्रुतस्तदनु गत: कुमारकै:

दिने पुनस्तरुणदशामुपेयुषि

स्वकैर्भवानतनुत भोजनोत्सवम् (51.8)

 

savismayaiḥ kamalabhavādibhiḥ surair -

anudrutasadanu gataḥ kumārakaiḥ 

dine punastaruṇadaśāmupēyuṣi!

svakairbhavānatanuta bhojanōtsavam

 

സവിസ്മയൈ: കമലഭവാദിഭി: സുരൈർ

അനുദ്രുതസ്തദനു ഗത: കുമാരകൈ: ।

ദിനേ പുനസ്തരുണദശാമുപേയുഷി

സ്വകൈർഭവാനതനുത ഭോജനോത്സവം ॥8॥

 

ബ്രഹ്മാദി ദേവകളാകാശമാർഗ്ഗേ പിന്തുടർന്നൂ

ഭവദ് വിസ്മയം കണ്ടങ്ങയെയപ്പോൾ ഭവാൻ

കൂട്ടാരുമൊത്തുകൂടി നന്നായ് ആശിച്ചപോൽ

ഭോജനം ചെയ്തു മദ്ധ്യാഹ്നസമയമാവനത്തിൽ  

 

 

Brahma and the Gods beheld in awe,

As You moved, a spectacle without flaw.

At a serene place, You and your friends settled,

For a picnic lunch, as You so well planned.

 

 

Lord Brahma, along with the other Gods, gazed in awe at the remarkable feat unfolding before them, their divine eyes following Your every movement from the heavens above. You continued Your work, and as the midday hour approached, You found a serene spot to pause, where, in the company of friends, You enjoyed the picnic, savoring the meal as had been thoughtfully planned.

 

 

51.9

विषाणिकामपि मुरलीं नितम्बके

निवेशयन् कबलधर: कराम्बुजे

प्रहासयन् कलवचनै: कुमारकान्

बुभोजिथ त्रिदशगणैर्मुदा नुत: (51.0)

 

viṣāṇikāmapi muralīṃ nitambake

niveśayan kabala dharaḥ karāmbuje

prahāsayan kalavacanaiḥ kumārakān

bubhojitha tridaśagaṇairmudā nutaḥ 

 

വിഷാണികാമപി മുരലീം നിതംബകേ

നിവേശയന്‍ കബലധര: കരാംബുജേ ।

പ്രഹാസയൻ കലവചനൈ: കുമാരകാന്‍

ബുഭോജിഥ ത്രിദശഗണൈർമുദാ നുത: ॥9॥

 

കൊമ്പുമോടക്കുഴലുമഴകിൽ അരയിൽത്തിരുകി

താമരക്കൈയിൽ ചോറുരുളയുമായ് കൂട്ടരോടു

സരസം കളിപറഞ്ഞു ചിരിച്ചുല്ലസിച്ചു ചോറുണ്ണും

ഭവാനെക്കണ്ടു ദേവന്മാർ സ്തുതീച്ചൂ സഹർഷം.

 

With a horn and a flute, tucked in Your waistband,

Enchanting form, with a ball of rice in the lotus hand.

With humorous talks, Your friends laugh and rejoice,

Gods above, see You in awe, and sing Your praises.

 

Your charming form is adorned with a horn and a flute, gracefully tucked within the folds of Your waistband. In one of Your lotus hands, You playfully hold a ball of rice, evoking a cascade of laughter from those around You. With radiant joy, You partake in Your meal, and as You do, the celestial Gods above sing songs of praise in awe of Your divine presence.

 

 

51.10

सुखाशनं त्विह तव गोपमण्डले

मखाशनात् प्रियमिव देवमण्डले

इति स्तुतस्त्रिदशवरैर्जगत्पते

मरुत्पुरीनिलय गदात् प्रपाहि माम् (51.10)

 

sukhāśanaṃ tvih tava gōpamaṇḍale

makhāśanāt priyamiva devamaṇḍale

iti stutastridaśavarairjagatpatē

marutpurīnilaya gadāt prapāhi mām

 

സുഖാശനം ത്വിഹ തവ ഗോപമണ്ഡലേ

മഖാശനാത് പ്രിയമിവ ദേവമണ്ഡലേ ।

ഇതി സ്തുതസ്ത്രിദശവരൈർജഗത്പതേ

മരുത്പുരീനിലയ ഗദാത് പ്രപാഹി മാം ॥10॥

 

“ദേവന്മാരൊത്തിരുന്നു യജ്ഞവീതം ഭുജിക്കുന്നതിനേക്കാൾ

അങ്ങേക്ക് പ്രിയമീ ഗോപബാലന്മാരുമൊത്തുള്ള വനഭോജനം”

ഏവം ബ്രഹ്മാദി ദേവകളാൽ സ്തുതിച്ചു വിളങ്ങി നിലക്കും വിഭോ

ഗുരുവായൂരപ്പാ എൻ രോഗങ്ങളകറ്റി നന്നായ് രക്ഷിക്കണേ!

 

O Lord! In the forest, with the Gopa boys, it seems

You find more joy in the picnic in the woods!

More than in sharing in the sacrificial Yagna offerings,

Guruvayoorappa! Thus, praised by the Gods,

Grant me relief from my illness and protect me.

 

O Lord! It appears that You find greater joy in sharing the humble repast with the Gopa boys in the forest than in partaking of the sacred Yajna offerings alongside the celestial beings. Guruvayoorappa! Thus, praised by the Gods, I beseech You to grant relief from my afflictions and shield me with Your divine protection.
